Escolania de Montserrat

Catalonia's 13th-century all-boys choir, providing daily choral music for the services of Montserrat Abbey.

About the choir

One of the oldest choral institutions in Europe, the Escolania de Montserrat traces its history to the 1200s. The fifty-strong all-boys choir provides daily choral music for services at the Benedictine Abbey of Montserrat, perched above the mountains north-west of Barcelona. The school combines rigorous musical training with the boys' general education, and the choir's signature work — the Catalan hymn 'El Virolai' — has made it a national cultural treasure.
