History

Major League Baseball traces its history to the founding of the National League in 1876 and the American League in 1901; the two leagues began crowning a unified champion via the World Series in 1903. Every era of American sport is reflected in baseball — the dead-ball era and Babe Ruth, Jackie Robinson breaking the colour line, the steroid era, sabermetrics, and the analytics-driven modern game.

Structure

Thirty teams split between the American and National Leagues, each league divided into three five-team divisions (East, Central, West). Each team plays 162 regular-season games. Twelve teams reach the postseason — six per league: three division winners and three wild cards. The World Series is best-of-seven.

Format

League standings are decided by win-loss record. Tiebreakers run through head-to-head, intra-divisional record, intra-league record and run differential.
