When People Were Shorter and Lived Near the Water (frequently shortened to WPWSALNTW) was an American experimental psychedelic rock band from New York City active from 1986–1996. The group's recorded output consists solely of cover versions of older pop, country, swing and rock songs performed in obtuse arrangements. The group formed in 1986 around vocalists Kim Rancourt and Joe Defilipps (who also played trombone) and guitarists David Raymer and Bob Meetsma.
