
Paul Motian (25 March 1931 - 22 November 2011) was a jazz drummer who gained recognition through his work with the Bill Evans Trio on such albums as Sunday at The Village Vanguard. He was also a member of the Keith Jarret Quartet along with Charlie Haden and Dewey Redman. He also worked extensivley in a trio featuring saxophonist Joe Lovano and Bill Frisell in a series of albums for ECM Records. He made some of the most notable explorations of rubato in jazz music.
