Johann Christian Frischmuth (1741 - 1790) was born in Schwabhausen near Gotha in as the son of the local cantor. He first hired out as an actor to roving troupes of actors, was engaged in 1768 at the Komödienhaus in Hamburg, and in 1775 went to the court theater in Gotha as an actor of "comic and rumbling old age". After a private stay in Ohrdruf and again in Gotha, Frischmuth got an engagement at Döbbelin's Theater in Berlin in 1782 and took over the position of music director there from Johann André in 1784.
