Joan Chandos Baez (born January 9, 1941) is an American singer, songwriter, musician, and activist. She is primarily known for her contemporary folk music, which often includes themes of protest and social justice. Baez has performed publicly for over six decades and has released more than 30 albums. While Baez is generally classified as a folk singer, her music has expanded to include genres such as folk rock, pop, country, and gospel. She began her recording career in 1960 and gained early success.
