History
Founded as the American Professional Football Association in Canton, Ohio in 1920, the NFL adopted its current name in 1922 and merged with the rival American Football League in 1970. The merger created the AFC and NFC conferences and the modern Super Bowl, which has become the most-watched annual television event in American sport. Eras include Vince Lombardi's Green Bay Packers, the Pittsburgh Steelers' four titles in the 1970s, the San Francisco 49ers and Dallas Cowboys dynasties, the Bill Belichick / Tom Brady New England Patriots, and Patrick Mahomes' Kansas City Chiefs.
