Scipione Cerreto (Naples, 1551 - Naples, 1633) was an Italian music theorist, composer and lutenist. The biographical information on Scipione Cerreto is very scarce and deduced exclusively from his works, from which we learn that he lived for over eighty years. Despite being a composer and lutenist, due to the small number of surviving compositions, he is best known for his activity as a music theorist. His writings are of interest as a testimony of the musical practice of the early seventeenth century.
