Drummer John Bassett, bassist Step Morley and guitarist Bev Doyle had all appeared as characters in British mid-1970s children's TV show, 'Animal Kwackers'. When the show fizzled out the trio recruited sax player Andy Dummett and formed Sax Maniacs, releasing the 'Never Gonna Lose Me' single (1981) on the Penthouse record label. This was followed by two further 45s and the Oversaxed (1982) album before they fully embraced the ska scene and became The Ska-Dows.
