Born in Tehran, Iran, in 1941, Majid Kiani first studied Abolhasan Saba's "Radif" on Santour at the National Liberal Arts School of Music for four years. His teachers were Manoochehr Sadeghi and Mohammad Heidari. Next, Kiani studied part of Mirza Abdollah's Radif under Dariush Safvat and Nour Ali Boroumand at the College of Fine Arts of the University of Tehran. In order to master Habib Somai's method of playing Santour and to learn the remainder of Mirza Abdollah's Radif, Kiani continued to study under Boroumand for another four years.
