Leopoldo Américo Miguez (Niterói, Sep 9, 1850 — Rio de Janeiro, Jul 6, 1902) was a brazilian composer, violinist and conductor. At 32, Miguez travelled to Europe on his own expenses to improve his musical skills, and get highly influenced by Richard Wagner works. An active republican, Miguez composed the Brazilian Republic Proclamation Anthem, after a public contest promoted by the new regime government. In the begining of 1890, Miguez became the director of the National Music Institute,.
