About Legua York
Legua York is a hip-hop group that formed in 1997 in the streets of La Legua, a neighborhood in southern Santiago de Chile -- "just a legua" from the city center. During the September 11, 1973 military coup, La Legua was the only poblacion (organized low-income urban community) where the youth openly rejected the military takeover. Today La Legua is notorious for its drug dealing and violence. The name "Legua York" combines the "Legua" of the group's roots with "York," a comment on foreign (especially U.S.) influence in Latin America.
