Johann Gottfried Weiske (1745 - 1806) was a German cantor and composer. Weiker studied from 1767 at the University of Leipzig (Kingdom of Saxony). Only two years later he became a substitute cantor in Meissen. He became the successor as cathedral and city cantor there in 1774. He was the first in the German-speaking world to prescribe exact tempo indications for his compositions from 1789 onwards; the print was accompanied by an illustration and an exact description of his "Tactmesser" (metronome).
