About Johann Friedrich Meister

Johann Friedrich Meister (fl. c. 1670–1690) was a German composer known for Il Giardino del Piacere (1685), one of the finest instrumental publications of the German High Baroque. Almost nothing is known about Johann Friedrich Meister’s personal life, origins, or training — he is one of the 17th-century “paper trail ghosts.” But what survives is musically significant. He was active in northern Germany, probably with connections to Hamburg, Lübeck, or the courtly music networks surrounding the Hanseatic cities.
