JHC formed when Risa Mickenberg's boyfriend gave her a "birthday present" in the form of Joel Shelton, so that the guitarist could help Risa write a song, which later became "I'm Disgusting (Will You Marry Me?)" They clicked and continued to write songs together. The band was undecided whether to keep the Jesus H Christ name or switch to "the American People," but a poll on their MySpace site convinced them to stick with the Jesus H Christ name. In April 2006, JHC self-released their self-titled debut album.
