Born in Byram, Mississippi in January 1901, Ishman Bracey (aka Ishmon) was one of the foremost figures of the early Delta scene. He moved to Jackson in his early teens where he often busked during the 1920's with local celebrities such as Charlie McCoy and Son Spand, and became a close friend and musical colleague of Tommy Johnson for many years. His guitar work was straightforward and effective and his vocals were slightly harsh with a nasal overtone.
