A prolific pianist, songwriter, producer, and arranger who worked with Roy Ayers, Lloyd Price, Gene McDaniels, and Roberta Flack. Whitaker was an important figure in the 70s blending of jazz, soul, and funk. He wrote "We Live in Brooklyn," and the score to the blaxploitation classic Coffy. His greatest work may be the album Black Renaissance, recorded on January 15, 1976 with a studio full of players, friends, and family. Just two tracks make up the heavily improvised 40-minute long album that combines soul, jazz, poetry, funk, and even rap.
