The Gyüto Tantric college is one of the two great tantric colleges of the Gelug lineage of Tibetan Buddhism, to which the Dalai Lamas principally belong. It was founded in 1474 by Jetzun Kunga Thöndrüb (1419-1486) at Chamba Ling, east of Lhasa. It soon moved to Lhasa, occupying the 7th-century temple. Following the total invasion of Tibet by China in 1959, the monastery was reconstructed in the extreme north-east of India under the leadership of His Holiness The Dalai Lama, in several places.
