About Georg Christian Schemelli
Georg Christian Schemelli (c. 1676/1678/1680–1762) was a German Protestant church musician whose career led from early training at Leipzig’s Thomasschule to long service as court cantor (Hofkantor) at Zeitz. After working as a church musician in Treuenbrietzen, he took up the Zeitz post in 1727 and remained there until his retirement in 1758. His name lives on through the Musicalisches Gesang-Buch (Leipzig, 1736), a vast pietist devotional anthology of 954 sacred songs compiled for the Naumburg–Zeitz region.
