Cloud Furnace has been the nom de nom for Boston area bassist Tim Shea. In the spring of 1996 Tim hit upon a way of composing songs that involved four chords, all of which would be in one of the three diminished scales (each chord would be spaced as tonally different from the other three as possible). He then went about writing nine songs from this blueprint. Tim recruited Kris Thompson to play synth and Brendan Quinn to handle guitar and violin.
