Zanger Big Jones (echte naam: Marius Liesdek) treedt vaak op met His Kawinaband. Eind jaren vijftig brengt platenlabel Philips zijn muziek uit op single in de serie Song And Sound The World Around bij de aflevering over Suriname. Het is de eerste keer dat de Surinaamse muziekstijl Kawina te horen is op plaat. Big Jones en zijn muziek zijn opgenomen voor de film Faja Lobbi van Herman van der Horst. De film krijgt in 1960 een Gouden Beer in Berlijn.
