Bernoldus Niemand was one of the many names under which James Phillips, the pioneering South African rock musician, performed during the 1980s. Born in Springs on the East Rand (near Johannesburg) in 1959, Phillips grew up under Apartheid, and South African politics influenced much of his music, both in terms of content and style. He performed in a variety of bands, including Corporal Punishment, Illegal Gathering and The Cherry Faced Lurchers.
