Bernart (Bernard) Etxepare was a sixteenth-century Basque cleric and poet whose name marks a turning point in Basque cultural history. In 1545 he published Linguae Vasconum Primitiae (“First fruits of the Basque language”), widely treated as the first known book printed entirely in Basque. The volume gathers fifteen poems that move from religious themes to love poetry and a defence of women, includes an autobiographical piece describing the author’s imprisonment
