Oakland artist Baby Jaymes grew up immersed in the sounds of the classic school, R&B and funk artists of the Motown generation. As a result, his fresh sound, affectionately coined "ghetto retro", is heavily influenced by the artists of that era: Sylvia Robinson, Smokey, Aretha, Marvin, Tower of Power, Sly Stone, and other R&B pioneers. Baby Jaymes earned his stripes writing and working closely with several members of the Tonies camp and other San Francisco Bay Area bands.
