Robert Finck was born in Libertyville, Illinois but grew up mostly in Raleigh, North Carolina. He started The Tallest Tree House with a few friends from Enloe High School when he was in the ninth grade. It was built around his folk songwriting, but the debut EP "Saplings" also contained a song by the flutist, Mary Claire Becker. The band at one point had almost a dozen members, but settled to four or five for most of its existence. A variety of instruments sets The Tallest Tree House apart from most high school bands
