The Sands Family hail from County Down in Ireland, where they grew up on a small farm, near the village of Mayobridge. Coming from a long line of singers, musicians, poets and story-tellers, they were immersed in the tradition from child-hood. Tommy, Ben, Colum, Eugene ("Dino") and sister Anne first came to prominence when they won a National Folk Group competition in Dublin, in 1970, the prize being a residency in New York. After further forays in USA and Canada, the Family concentrated their attention on Europe.
