Brothers Shade (John) and Gerard Smith with mates Sharkey (Jacques) Koolen and Ross Hindman started performing at their local High School in Huntly, New Zealand in the 1960's as The Sapphires. They renamed as The Surfires and produced three singles, "I Can't Wait For Summertime"/"Flying Saucers", "Friction"/"A True Gentleman" and "Notice Me"/"When Will The Seasons Bring". All songs were written by lead guitarist Shade with Gerard taking care of the vocals and rhythm guitar, Ross on bass and Sharkey on drums.
