Starting out as a 'trad jazz' outfit, The Mike Cotton Jazzmen appeared in the 1962 film, 'The Wild and the Willing'. They enjoyed their only chart entry, 'Swing That Hammer', which hit#36 in the United Kingdom in May 1963, before adapting to the beat era as The Mike Cotton Sound in early 1964. With the name change came a change in style, their new sound being a proto-psychedelic brand of beat. In 1967 the band teamed up with former U.S. serviceman Bruce Lucas and recorded three singles under the moniker Lucas with The Mike Cotton Sound.
