The Mallik Family: Its musical tradition goes back to the late 18th century, when two brothers, Radhakrishna and Kartaram, arrived at the court of Darbhanga in the North-Eastern part of the country, having studied for over twenty years under Bhupat Khan, a descendant of the famous Mughal court singer Tan Sen. They made a name for themselves by averting a period of famine and severe drought which had lasted for three years by singing the Megh, the magical raga of rain, creating a heavy downpour immediately.
