The Lyman Family was a commune/cult founded by harmonica player Mel Lyman in the mid-1960s. Lyman had participated on folk singer Lisa Kindred's 1965 debut "I Like it This Way!" and what was meant to be Kindred's follow-up album. Lyman, however, stole the master tapes before its release, and re-used them for what was eventually to become "American Avatar", released in 1970 and now credited to "The Lyman Family With Lisa Kindred", with Lisa Kindred's contribution diminished in the final mix.
