San Quentin Prison; 1942. While serving a life sentence for political dissidence, Chris Beasley had a meeting that would forever change the history of ska music in Easton, MD. Nick Johnson, a guard at the prison, (who also happens to hold the world’s record at 77 hours for the lengthiest submersion in a vat of mashed potatoes), introduced him to Dan Van Skiver, the prison’s janitor, and the three began playing music together on instruments improvised from various items Van Skiver had found in the garbage.
