The Broken Are Crowned was started in 2009 by guitarists Nick Stanger and Mitchell Niemeyer who both attend the same middle school. They were in 6th grade at the time. Later that year they met bassist Robert Northrup. They got together often to play music. Nick and Mitchell would write music and considered themselves a band. In 7th grade (2009-2010) Mitchell took an interest in drums, started playing, got a drum set, but still remained rhythm guitarist until later 2010 when he switched to all drums.
