His sound fuses a range of musical vocabulary including Japanese folk melodies, Senegalese Mbalax rhythm, heavy dub and avant-garde jazz. His sounds are uniquely complex and organic in their inception. As producer and label owner, Kanaiwa collaborates with a range of musicians. He has worked with reggae legend Glen Brown. From the New York downtown free improv scene Kaniawa has teamed up with On Davis, Tomchess and Daniel Carter.
