Stan Hugill ( born 19 November 1906, died 13 May, 1992 ) was a sailor, painter, author and folksinger. He is credited as the "Last Shanteyman", having sailed on the last British squarerigger Garthpool in 1928 on her ill-fated final voyage. Stan spent his life as a sailor, was a POW during WWII and an instructor for Outward Bound from 1950 to 1975. He is the author of several books, most famously Shanties from the Seven Seas, the modern shanteyman's bible and Sailortown, about his ramblings along shore during his career as a merchantman.
