They use piano, upright bass, cello, violin, percussion, and vocals to create a sound that has been described by Tom Lynch of Chicago's Newcity as "moody, and at times even gothic, is a soundtrack to shadows in an old castle." Lynch also says that Singing in the Abbey "successfully pours minimalist classical piano through an alt-pop filter." The band proclaims themselves as "Julie Andrews and Thom Yorke's bastard love child."
