
Shivu Taralgatti was born in a village of North Karnataka where his father used to sing devotional songs at the temple village and where the blacksmith made shepherds' flutes. But he was attracted by classical Hindustani music and charmed by the sitar. His first guru was R. V. Gudiyal. Then he spent the year 1958 in Bombay learning from Ustad Zia Mohiuddin Dagar, but went back home. He was singled out by singer Pandit Mallikarjun Mansur who invited him to attend his musicians' circle in order to build up his repertoire
