Robert de Montesquiou (1855-1921) was a French Symbolist poet, aesthete, art collector, essayist, writer, biographer, painter, socialite and dandy. His best known book of poetry is Les Chauves-souris. He is mostly remembered for being the inspiration for the characters Des Esseintes and the Baron de Charlus in Huysman's À rebours and Proust's À la recherche du temps perdu, respectively, and he is immortalized in portraits by Whistler and Boldini.
