Richard Meale (1932-2009) was an Australian composer. He is best known for the 1986 opera Voss, with libretto by David Malouf based on the novel by Patrick White. Meale was one of the first Australian musicians to champion the avant-garde music of Europe; including works by composers such as Stockhausen, Boulez and Xenakis. He began writing in a post-Webernian serialist style. In 1961 he was awarded the Ford Foundation Scholarship for his 'Sonata for Flute and Piano'.
