Born Laurence Mazel on Nov 1, 1948 in Cambridge, MA; Died Mar 8, 2006 in Guilford, VT. Married: Margie Serkin. Two children: Lena and Miles. Adopted the name "Raphe Malik" while working with Cecil Taylor. One of the greatest exponents of the avant garde trumpet during the late 20th and very early 21st centuries. He played in R&B bands as a young man growing up in the greater Boston area. He also was fluent in Mandarin Chinese and self-taught in a wide variety of subjects.
