Legendary Cuban percussionist Pancho Quinto has opted to tread in uncharted territory. This unusual experiment in rhythm, harmony and vocals connects the dots between Afro-Cuban and Afro-American popular and folkloric styles. Tweaking the elements of rumba, jazz and the funk of urban flavors, much of this project -- especially the first half, as well as the last track -- sounds as if it is being played either backwards or at the wrong speed, thanks in part to the mix by Oscar Autie and Greg Landau.
