Oswald Russell was a Jamaican classical composer known for blending Jamaican folk music with classical composition techniques. He contributed significantly to the development of classical music in Jamaica and the Caribbean. He was born in August 1933 in Kingston, Jamaica, son of the popular and respected Jim Russell, long-time Registrar of Births, Marriages & Deaths in that city. He began his piano studies under the direction of Ena Helps.
