Nokondi Nama is the stage name of Papuan artist Charles Uri Essyhafo. Originally a two-piece, Nokondi Nama was first formed in the mid 1980's, then comprising of Essyhafo and his longtime friend Henry Larius. Larius left the band after the release of their initial album, with Essyhafo continuing to release music under the Nokondi Nama name. The name itself comes from Nokondi, a mythological figure from the Eastern Highlands, and nama, the word for song or music in many Eastern Highlands languages.
