He practiced a lot and played with some people every now and then. But not much happened and so he kept on playing by himself. Slowly he got to know the singer-songwriters from the sixties and he started to like their music more and more. Through Neil Young, he got to know Bob Dylan, and later on Tom Waits and Nick Drake were added to the list.
