Neville Marcano, known as the Growling Tiger, was a popular performer from calypso's golden era of the 1930s. As a performer, both in the recording studio and before an audience, Tiger deployed expert timing, rhythm, harmonic and rhythmic shading, and above all, a sense of presence. Although his singing conveyed a wide range of feelings, he always maintained a sense of mastery over his setting. Mr. Marcano, a bantamweight boxer who won the Trinidadian title in 1929, made his first recordings in New York in 1935 for the Decca label.
