The project was formed in mid-2008 by founder (and only member) Mike O'Brien. Influenced heavily by early Mortiis, Dead Can Dance, Enigma, Claustrum, and various other smaller projects, Melankolia set out to create a demo in late 2008. Mid 2009 saw the release of Nokturnum on the small American label Beneath the Fog.
