About Manuel Botelho de Oliveira

Manuel Botelho de Oliveira (Salvador , 1636 – Salvador, January 5 , 1711 ) was a lawyer , politician and Baroque poet from Colonial Brazil. He was the first Brazilian-born author to have a book published. Son of an infantry captain, he studied law at the University of Coimbra , in Portugal. Back in Brazil, he began to practice law and was elected councilor of the Chamber of Salvador. In 1694 he became captain-major of the districts of Papagaio
