About John E Sharpe and The Squires
John E Sharpe was a South African guitarist and vocalist. Along with bassist Les Goode (whom he'd met whilst playing in a Johannesburg group "The Deans"), he formed the Squires in 1963. After a couple of years they were signed by Clive Calder to CBS (South Africa). They released 4 singles and an LP in the period 1965 - 1966. The Squires became the resident band in the late 60s in a Hillbrow basement club, "The Downstairs", run by his father, after which the band folded.
