Johannes Meinardus Coenen. Dutch composer and director, 1824-1899. He studied bassoon at the Conservatory in The Hague, and played this instrument in the royal band of Kings William I and II. In 1852 he moved to Amsterdam, where he became director of the orchestra of the Grand Théâtre and later musical director of the Stads-Schouwburg. He later became the founder and first director of the first professional symphony orchestras in the Netherlands, the orchestra of the "Paleis voor Volksvlijt", which existed until 1895.
