Jay Scholar was born February 18, 1991 in Jacksonville, Florida. At the age of 7, he moved to Charleston, South Carolina. Growing up, Jay Scholar was referred to as a "nerd" because he attended a private school. Where some saw this as a negative, Jay managed to turn the word "nerd" into a positive. Jay Scholar took advantage of his school's emphasis on creative writing and began composing poetry. Poetry soon turned into lyrics that gave way to making music.
