Alexander (January 21, 1916 in Hamilton, MS - July 8, 1996, West Hollywood, CA) was an all-around session musician (bassist, guitarist, singer, drummer and percussionist) and producer who recorded extensively with 1960s and '70s soul artists, such as Sam Cooke, the Bar-Kays, the Soul Stirrers, Mavis Staples and Isaac Hayes. He contributed percussion on I'm Free during the Rolling Stones' September 1965 L.A. recordings. J W Alexander with the The Pilgrim Travelers were a gospel group popular in the late 1940s and early 1950s.
